Alumni Spotlight for May 2010

Meet Anthony Neal, Class of 1991

Anthony Neal, a 1991 graduate of Alcorn State University, has been employed with the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority for over 15 years.  He was recently promoted to Operations Manager in January 2009.  Anthony’s duties include overseeing approximately $12 million dollars in hauling and disposal costs for the city of Detroit.

Of his Alcorn experience, Anthony says, “the four and half years that I spent at ASU allowed me to live the black college experience; this is an experience that I would not have received if I had attended a school in Michigan.  The small classrooms and one-on-one attention that I received from my professors prepared me for graduate school.  Alcorn impacted me because as a proud alumnus, I recruit students from the Detroit metropolitan area and let them know that you can receive a great education from a small college.”

While at Alcorn Anthony was involved with the Social Science Club, the Political Science Club, the Honors Club and Phi Beta Lambda.  He was a member of the first Alcorn State University Honda All-Star Challenge Team in the spring of 1990, which lost in the championship game against West Virginia State.  He was politically active supporting candidates for political office especially in Vicksburg, as a member of the Political Science Club in campaigning for Robert Walker, the first black elected as mayor of Vicksburg.

Anthony’s favorite alumni activity is attending the annual Mid-Winter Conferences.  He says, “You can rekindle connections with classmates you have not seen in over 20 years.  That is the Alcorn experience…a family atmosphere that continues to grow”.
